A True Surprise, and Oh, So Wise

I picked this movie up on a whim, with no expectations and foreknowledge of its subject. What a wonderful surprise! My wife, daughters, and I were drawn in by the easygoing humor of this story, then hooked by the family drama.

Based on the true story of Evelyn Ryan, as detailed by her grown daughter in a book of the same name, "The Prize Winner..." is not only a beautiful account of a mother's love for her children, but also of her astonishing forgiveness and sacrifice for an irresponsible husband. Julianne Moore is superb in this role, playing each scene with restraint and subtlety. She is a housewife in the fifties and sixties, raising ten children, while putting her literary skill to use by earning money through mail-in contests. Woody Harrelson plays the alcoholic and...
