In 1996, Kathryn and Michael Havens visited Spain. In a country dominated by red wines, theyfound this white selling at relatively high prices (for Spain), and on all the best restaurant lists,especially those specializing in seafood. It was love at first sniff, then reinforced in the taste: thewines had the haunting floral aromatics of Riesling, the bright acid nerve” of Sauvignon Blanc, buta subtle mid-palate exotic fruit recalling Viogner. It refreshed the palate, instead of overwhelming itwith oak, alcohol, and fat (a lovely contrast to so many white wines we know in California).Albariño is grown on both sides of the Minho River valley (the northern border between Portugaland Spain), where its higher percentage historically distinguished Portugal’s best Vinho Verde.Today it is also grown as a variety to stand alone there, as well as the neighboring Spanish regionof Rías Baixas (in the province of Galicia), where many producers now offer it.In 1997 we arranged to plant some budwood from the famous Mor
